A cold wind blew through the streets of the clockwork city. It was that time of year again, yet the dark purple-and-black clad figure was wearing the same outfit that he had worn in the heat of Konnin Isle: a thin, long sleeved shirt and long pants. He seemed unperturbed by the weather, however, and went about his business as usual. Or rather, it would have been, had YK not asked him for a favor. Malthus stood before the entrance to a large shopping mall, staring down at a small piece of paper with some hastily scribbled writing upon it. One eyebrow was raised, and the man had a cold and somewhat disgusted stare.
"He wants me to buy.... WHAT now...?"

A gleaming city of metal... of silver.. of flashes of light and misty mornings. Clockwork sounds, humming traffic, switching colors of light, splashes of disturbed sidewalk water. Everything was so stunning and interesting and.. and... new!
Only... the boy now making his way through the busy, frosty morning was waaay more worried about a little cut on his finger more than anything else. Upon his shoulder, a white duck sat, watching with a rather annoyed look upon his countenance if such a thing could be displayed by water fowl.
"Ow ow owwww... You think I'll die of blood loss? ... Maybe it'll get infected! Maybe... maybe I'll catch a cancer! Oh nooooo....!" Syke wailed into the streets, earning the curious stares of some chilled passerbys. His alternate black and white shoes clapped against the littered sidewalk as he traveled... in no direction in particular. He had just wanted to get out a bit and well... for the life of him, he didn't know why that little hole in the ground had picked a fight with him really! It was all it's fault! It made him trip! And now he had a wound to show for it. And he watched the little hole laugh with smiling lips before it had become a hole again... Strange.. Those kinds of things always happened to him lately, especially when he got hurt... weird things...
"Quack..." Looking up, Syke noticed a looming building before him, several ways longer than anything he'd seen in a city. "Whoooa... M-A-L-L.... Maaaull... That's cool, let's check it out Ark!" the boy said to the duck excitedly, looking for a way to enter and leave the cold bite of the wind that... strangely didn't bother him all that much.

Luckily for Malthus, he was provided with a distraction from deciding if he should venture into Victoria's Secret or not in the form of a boy with a duck perched upon his shoulder. Actually, now that he thought about it, the pair looked strangely familiar... Oh yes! Now he remembered! It was that Syke boy and his duck Arkadios that he had met in that cave on Konnin. What a surprise to see him here, in this city... Syke didn't strike Malthus as much of a city goer.
"Syke, my dear boy!" he called out in greeting, going over to meet the lad with open arms. "How delightful to see you out and about! How is the plot I gave you working out for you, hmm? Is it sufficient?" He placed a hand on Syke's shoulder and studied him carefully, making sure that the boy appeared to be doing well.

And so it was that Syke had just run into the very person he owed his life to as he was looking for a doorway into the 'maul'. Kind words, a genuine face that hid a dark secret Syke hadn't yet discerned. 'Inwardly crazy yet totally cool' would have been the boy's quick sum of Malthus.
A big smile spread across his face as the violet-themed other strode over. "Haaaai Malthus!" Syke breathed out a big gust of misty air. "The plot? Oh, it's great! Muuuch better than where I used to live. It's been awhile huh, since we met though," the boy said, sticking his tongue out in thought, trying to remember their encounter at the island. Bad idea... His tongue almost fell off. "Eek. I mean... What are you doing here?" Another smile. He seemed to be holding one hand in the other like a cripple, but the reason seemed to be hidden under his sleeves. Upon his shoulder, the duck Arkadios made an attempt at a glare at Malthus but did nothing more. "What do you DO at a 'maul' anyway?"

"Ah? Here? Oh... yes...." he mumbled, face growing stern again. "I've been sent... shopping... which is what the mall is mainly for, yes, but... it's Yami Kodai that's sent me here, so... I'd really rather not..." He held the piece of paper in his hand, crumpling it slightly. "Conniving incubus... having me do his dirty work for him..." Shaking his head and sighing, Malthus regained his composure and tried to smile again for Syke. "But indeed, it has been a while, hasn't it? Good to see you're... both doing well." He added the 'both' in to try to placate the duck. If he didn't know any better, he'd say that that duck had it in for him. Managing to glance down at the boy's hands, he added, "Though, come now, why are you holding your hand like that? Have you sustained injury?" His look now consisted of fatherly concern, and gently he took a hold of Syke's hand.

Watching with growing concern at Malthus's... reluctance to want to shop for YK (someone he'd only met by passing glance once), the boy tried to imagine what was so hard about shopping for things for a friend. So the 'maul' was for shopping then. If only he had a bit of money, but at least he'd be able to window shop or whatever people called it.
And then Malthus noticed him holding his hand. "Oh? Ah..." "..Sustained injury..." He sure had a funny way of saying things, that silly Malthus. Syke replied more simply, "Yeah... A hole in the ground attacked me..." He shivered a little, thinking of those scary lips in the ground. His duck only fluffed up some and nuzzled it's beak back into it's wings, clearly disinterested in the conversation. "It was meeeean, Malthus," the boy flailed, almost sending the duck flying.

"A hole in the ground attacked you?" Malthus repeated, raising an eyebrow. It wasn't that he didn't believe Syke -- stranger things had happened -- but surely it was an unusual event to have occurred. "You weren't injured too badly, I hope?" Turning Syke's hand around in his own, Malthus noticed the small cut on the boy's finger and figured that this was the 'wound', so to speak. "Ah, hm... Perhaps we could buy you some... er.... bandages.... for that. That's the word, yes?" He looked thoughtful for a moment, and then finally decided that yes, it was the correct word. "Shall we go inside, then?" he asked, letting go of Syke's hand. "I don't think I shall be buying what YK has asked for, as... it's a bit... unorthodox... but it is always a pleasure to wander the stores."

"Un orthee... whut?" the young Chaos asked, following after the taller Malthus, taking quick steps towards the gleaming double-door entrance. He felt the small throbbing in his hand even more as the cold receded, as it had numbed it from before. "Ow ow ow ow... Bandages, yes... And yeah, it attacked me it did. The hole had really scary lips too, like... like..." To show what he meant, Syke smooshed his face and made weird kissy lips. "Like that! Only it tripped me." He spoke as if this weren't a weird thing at all, just an instance of harassment.
As soon as they entered, his eyes grew big at all the sights and sounds and smells. Food vendors, busy stores, people with odd bags hanging from their arms like trees laden with obese fruit. Even Arkadios purred a little and stuck his head out to catch a glimpse, since he too obviously had never been in such a place. The duck himself found it a little stuffy, the big glass dome at the ceiling being nothing but a fake semblance of freedom. He was a bird, it was natural to be a little claustrophobic.
"Wooooow! This place is big." Little bit of an understatement there. Syke twirled around in a full circle before locating where Malthus was again, head spinning more.. from spinning.. than anything.

"Don't go getting lost now, hmm?" Malthus chuckled, stuffing the piece of paper into a pocket. "Though, if you do, there are maps of the area scattered about." He pointed out one such map, a towering billboard of plastic marked with the name and location of every store, food stand, and restroom. "Now... bandages... I suppose that would be in the pharmacy," he mused, looking up at the map and using a finger to trace the path they should take. "Luckily for us, it isn't too far. Just keep to the left side of the stores and we should come across it." Nodding in affirmation, Malthus began walking, bringing out his wallet and going over his Skor. Not that he particularly needed to -- they were only buying bandages, after all -- but money had a habit of sneaking out of his wallet sometimes and he wished to see just how much he had.

Syke blinked and looked at the giant map billboards showing their location as well as several other places marked with colorful dots and zigzagging lines. It almost made his head hurt so he stuck to Malthus instead.
"Stick to the left... Stick to the left..." he muttered, keeping behind Malthus as they walked, earning more strange looks. Suddenly breaking into a random song, Syke chimed, "Stick to the leeefttt~" A small twirl, almost sending the duck flying again.
Arkadios only gave him a 'look' then returned to feeling rather claustrophobic again.
"Saaaay Malthus. Do you go here alot? What kind of things can you buy where we get bandages? Is there food? I like food~" the boy seemed to have forgotten all about the cut in his finger, instead twirling and following his friend. There was a strange shifting wind inside the mall that drew some people's attention. The air conditioning was good but not THAT good.

Ah, the boy... So silly. Malthus couldn't help but smile at Syke's antics.
"Well, Syke, a pharmacy is where they sell such things as medicines and other tools to help you when you fall ill. They don't sell food there, but there are food stalls within the entirety of the mall, so if you get hungry, don't hesitate to tell me. The day is on me," he smiled, putting his wallet back into his pocket. "...Ah, here we are. The pharmacy." He entered, the scent of medicines and cleanliness hitting him like a wall. This was why he disliked these sorts of places, and rarely ever visited doctors... but they were only here to buy bandages, and so he put up with it silently.
"There are different types of bandages available, Syke... For example, some have decals on them... Which would you like?"

Walking into the store, the strange wind immediately cut of outside. The boy was too distracted to notice however and looked around with excitement. "Oooooh! Stuff... Wait... The day's on you?" the boy blinked, processing this before flailing his arms again. A few of the medicine packets flew from the shelves seemingly for no reason at all. "Nuuu. I can't spend your money, I already owe you enough, silly," the blond and red-haired boy giggled, moving over to an aisle with various pills on them. "Hum... I wonder what these are for... I'm guessing this isn't where YK wanted you to shop right?"

"Well, unless you have some Skor, I'm afraid you'll be forced to let me pay for everything," chuckled Malthus, browsing the different types of bandages for sale. "Which brings me to the question... How do you plan on supporting yourself in this world? You did mention that you had found some... friends, I suppose you could call them... Are they helping you at all?" His attention was suddenly grabbed by a package of bandages that had rubber duck decals on them. Knowing Syke's fondness for ducks, he picked up the package and showed it to the boy. "How about these, hm?"

A squeal as the boy clasped his hands together in approval. "Those are the coolest! I didn't know bandies came like that!" the boy did another circle, then stopped, thinking. "Hum... Oh right... Skor, that stuff... Uhm..." He scratched his cheek, rather embarrassed and a little ashamed at having Malthus pay for his bandages. "I guess... uhm... I find some. Torpedo likes to help sometimes and uhh... Joggie drops some off if I'm like.. going to die," he giggled.
That was when something else knocked over a few packages on a shelf fell over and toppled to the ground in a loud clatter, drawing the attention of a few more shoppers. Syke turned and poked at his lip curiously looking at the mess. "I swear I didn't do it..." he muttered more to himself...
And then he turn back to Malthus with a weird sort of grin. His eyes had gone all wrong... In a different voice, the boy uttered...
"Hah hah hah... But I did..."

A raised eyebrow was all the possessed boy received, as Malthus temporarily pocketed the ducky band-aids and bent over to begin picking up the items that had flown off the shelves. He knew that this wasn't Syke speaking now, and he wasn't particularly interested in making an acquaintance with whoever it was that was possessing the boy. It seemed to be a Yami Kodai type character, one who spent their time making others' lives miserable, and Malthus figured that knowing one such person was enough. However, he had the feeling that he was going to know this possessor by the end of the day...
"Well, if you would mind not creating any more work for me, I'd be much obliged," he replied curtly, finishing cleaning up the aisle and moving towards the counter to pay for the bandages.
