Whee! I luff these books SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much. I call the trilogy my only favorite and it will NEVER be replaced! Well, I just wanted to start a thread to talk about Phillip Pullman's genius novel and how they are making a TOTALLY BUTCHERED MOVIE "based" on the book, 'The Golden Compass'. *grumbles about how they changed the bad polar bear's name and how the characters look nothing like the actors* Yah know, if you're not going to base it off of the book, THEN DON'T NAME IT AFTER THE BOOK. *ish very angry about how they make so many movied "based" off of books but they leave out or distort so much stuff that it's totally different FROM the book! Grrrr...

I'd say those are good books, I guess, but they really go agaist my religion. The author is actually proud of that part of the book, and seems to hate anyone with my religion, so I stopped reading those books...

I NOT going to allow this to go into a religios topic.
Everyone's allowed to have their own beliefs.
Philip Pullman has stated on his site that he is against "All Organized Religion"
So it's not JUST your religion, it's everybodies. Because they cause wars. He believes in a divine being, but doesn't take the words of people who claim to have spoken to god.
Anyway, leaving out the religious aspect, I find the characters and writing style very fun. I love how everything is explained, and not just left to the imagination.
I greatly enjoyed the series, for it made me cry. A very good story, something worth reading, even if you are religious.
I hate it when things stop others from reading. makes me sad. =( Oh well, that's life. -waddles away-

Yes, Moofie, I agree. At this camp I now don't have to go to this summer or any other summer anymore(WHOO HOO! XD), they didn't let us read Harry Potter because it was a camp at a private school(And as you know, most private schools are religious) and they said that it had to do with dark magic and stuff that didn't exist and went against the religion they endorsed and blah blah blah. It's a CHILDREN'S book, for crying out loud! The worst part of it is probably the cuss words, but even they aren't that bad. XP They are WAY too overprotective. And I did love the characters. Will and Lyra's daemons were my favorites, and Serafina Pekkala's. But Will's was the prettiest, yus Kirjava was. *huggles the silveryblackbluepurpleish kitty* How I pictured her made her those colors... XD

-has never read any of the books being discussed here- Nor has Okko, I believe. She might have, but I don't think so.
Anyway, if this does keep going on matters if religion, since its a general rule that it's not to be discussed on forums like these, I will lock this thread.

I haven't got my hands on the books yet, personally. But I go to a religious school so it's been discussed, and I personally don't really care what the author thinks. When you buy a book you buy it's premisses. But that also doesn't mean you have to buy the author's beliefs. You acknowledge them for the spectacular writer they are and enjoy their stories as nothing more then stories and leave it at that. *Okko is now in the mood to go against her 'stay away from the things that aren't godly' teachers and buy the series... which she will do* Only cause, they've got their heads up their butts. Honestly; If you don't buy into it as more then fiction who cares what you read? Even the most religious people read things outside of their religion to strengthen up on their knowledge of the world around them XP Ok, Okko has been dancing a very thin line around the edge of this rule so she will shut up now ^x^ (( Hmmm. I suppose talking about this in the Irc would be ok so long as it's not over done or moved into the boards right Toxic? *Must pm you about this or something*))

Hai, so long as it doesn't make anyone uncomfortable who happens to be on the chat at the time. Of course, it's not much advised.
The rule applies here because it is open for everyone to see and read, and it is not something to be discussed openly among so many different people with their different personal views and all. It's a general rules of all the places like these for multiple reasons.

Actually, I made this thread to discuss how it's being made into a movie how well it's written... XP But it seems to be a bit... too into religion, I see. I understand. It's a good book, but it does go against religions. It's a really good book though, and no one should let prejudice stop that. Anyone who hasn't read it(and doesn't care about whatever might be in it, religious or not) should. I recommend it. If you've read Redwall, Harry Potter, or even The Looking Glass Wars(which all of these series I have enjoyed greatly!), you'll like this book. Ooh, all this recommendations to books gives me an idea! *runs off to start new post*

Ah, the movie..
I'm worried.
I don't know enough to say "it's good!" or "It's bad!"
But I AM genuinely concerned. I mean, they're saying that whoever has the Golden Compass shall control destiny or something, which is not the case. If that were so... well... Throughout the series there are THREE alethiometers mentionned.
So it's a little rediculous. Nobodies fighting for the alethiometer Lyra has it's... *sigh* It's complicated, I'm worried they won't do the book justice. =/;;

(I live in Taiwan.) From what I saw, it's okay, although I don't like how they changed Iorek's line "I will serve you in your campaign until I die or until I have a victory" by removing the "until I die" bit. I think that makes him look a bit arrogant, as if he is sure he'll win. I wanna ride Iorek. And Aslan too.

XD me too, Gray. ;D I'm very worried. I can tell, it won't be done some justice. They changed IOFUR'S name! To RAGNAR! Wasn't Ragnar the bear king BEFORE Iofur and Iorek? I think it's wrong. And to what Moof said, I realized that listening closely to the trailer. Grrrrrr. That's all I can think of. GRRRRRR!! Are they, like, TRYING to butcher the movie into a family film that keeps you on your toes? And when was she walking around Oxford, I DO NOT remember her walking around talking about the North with her "Uncle" Asriel. They better not reveal Lyra's family. If they do, I will never watch that movie again. XP

While I haven't read the book, the movie looks interesting to me. In the case of books being slaughtered on the movie screen, here is a tip: Don't watch the movie thinking that it's the story told in the book. Think of it as a new story with the same name. Sorta like fan fiction.
And if you threaten not to watch the movie again, what does it matter? It won't bring any good. If you wanna compare the book and the movie and will be unhappy if the movie isn't like the original story, then don't watch it period. Books and movies are hardly ever the same, but that is what can make it interesting at times- two stories, while similar, are different.
Thought I'd toss my logical-ness out there.

Hmmm... you make a good point Toxic. Yes, I might as well not watch it at all if I expect it, but I'm just too curious for that. X3 And it looks like it should be okay, but I'm just not sure. I mean, I would prefer it to be as close to the story as possible... but I guess it'd be okay. Just as long as they don't leave out too much or change much either. If they leave out too much, then I'll be a bit miffed. But other than that, I guess I could be satisfied with it, as long as it's like the story. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't exactly like it, I mean the Harry Potter movies weren't like the books. In the fifth movie they left out a lot, but that was the longest book in the series and they weren't going to make it a 4 hour movie just to get everything in. But The Golden Compass isn't that long, so they'll be adding things that aren't there I would suspect. And I'm hoping that they won't try to squeeze the whole trilogy into this movie, which I'm sure they won't. And I guess they'll also make The Subtle Knife and the Amber Spyglass. My favorite of the trilogy would have to be the Subtle Knife. That one was the best. I would have to say Stelamaria is my favorite daemon in the Subtle Knife, and my favorite character is... ack, I'm have a mind bla- Lee Scoresby! That's right... I love Hester. *snuggles rabbit daemon* she's so cute in my mind.

I think I'm a... purist, or whatever.
I like Lord of the RIngs because they kept true to the story. That's what I want. If you're not doing the movie on the book, don't give it the same gosh darn title. <__<;; -goes into evil book loving mode-
